A Guide to Reptile Live Food: Exploring Nutritious Options for Your Scale-Bearing Friends

For reptile enthusiasts, providing a well-balanced diet is vital to the health and well-being of their scaly companions. While commercial reptile diets are readily available, we think it's vital to incorporate live food into your reptile's feeding routine. It offers a ton of benefits, including enrichment, mental stimulation, and mimicking their natural hunting behaviours. In this blog post, we will explore various types of reptile live food and highlight the reptiles they are suitable for. Let's dive into the exciting world of reptile live food!

Crickets

Crickets are the most commonly used live food for reptiles and serve as an excellent staple option. They are rich in protein, calcium, and other essential nutrients. They come in various sizes, making them suitable for reptiles of different ages and sizes. Reptiles that typically feed on crickets include bearded dragons, leopard geckos, anoles, and many species of chameleons.

Locusts

Locusts offer a rich nutritional profile, providing essential proteins, vitamins, minerals, and amino acids crucial for reptile growth and overall health. Additionally, locusts have an optimal calcium to phosphorus ratio, which is essential for maintaining healthy bones and preventing calcium-related issues in reptiles. Their soft exoskeleton ensures easy digestion, reducing the risk of digestive problems and allowing reptiles to efficiently extract nutrients.

Mealworms

Mealworms are a popular choice among reptile owners. They offer a good balance of protein and fat, making them ideal for reptiles that require a slightly higher fat content in their diet. Geckos, skinks, and certain types of turtles are some reptiles that enjoy mealworms. It's important to remember though, that you shouldn't be feeding your reptile a whole heap of mealworms to your reptile, as it can actually have a detrimental effect. Whilst mealworms are high in fat, they are low in calcium, so too many can throw the balance of calcium and phosphorus and can potentially lead to deficiencies and skeletal issues. Mealworms have a hard chitinous exoskeleton (that's the shell that covers their body, insects and crustaceans have it) can be a bit hard to digest and increases the risk of impaction. All in all, mealworms are good, but don't rely too heavily on them.

Dubia Roaches

Dubia roaches are nutrient-rich and have a soft exoskeleton, making them highly digestible for reptiles. They are an excellent source of protein, essential fats, and amino acids. Bearded dragons, leopard geckos, chameleons, and monitor lizards are among the reptiles that relish these nutritious roaches.

Waxworms

Waxworms are high in fat and are commonly used as a treat or for reptiles that require additional energy, such as those going through growth spurts or breeding. However, they should be fed sparingly due to their high-fat content. Reptiles like leopard geckos and certain species of turtles will eagerly devour these tasty treats.

Silkworms

Silkworms are soft-bodied larvae and are an excellent source of protein, calcium, and other nutrients. They have a low-fat content and are suitable for reptiles that require a balanced diet. Bearded dragons, chameleons, and some types of skinks are known to enjoy these nutrient-packed worms.

Incorporating live food into your reptile's diet provides essential nutrients, enrichment, and mental stimulation. Each type of live food mentioned above offers unique benefits for reptiles and helps replicate their natural feeding behaviours. Remember to offer a varied diet and ensure that the live food is appropriately sized for your reptile's age and species. Always provide fresh water and a suitable feeding schedule based on your reptile's specific requirements.

As responsible reptile owners, it's crucial to maintain high-quality standards when sourcing live food to ensure your scaly friends receive the best nutrition possible.
